Thailand
Summary
Between 2010 and 2023, Thailand’s digital dependence increased significantly. Its DDI value increased by around 18%, rising from 0.62 to 0.73. The main driver of this increase was the country's growing reliance on trade in ICT services, which surged from 0.43 to 0.68 — over twice the increase seen in the overall DDI value. Dependence on ICT goods also increased moderately during this period, rising from 0.34 in 2010 to 0.44 in 2023. Dependence on platforms remained slightly below the maximum level, while dependence on foreign patents was total. Meanwhile, Thailand gradually reduced its dependence on ICT goods imports from the United States, with the corresponding value falling to an extremely low 0.09 by 2023. In contrast, its dependence on Chinese ICT goods increased steadily, reaching an all-time high of 0.64 in 2023.
Policies
Our research documented few concrete digital policies in Thailand between 2020 and 2026. While a “Royal Thai Air Force White Paper” from 2025 states the goal to reduce dependence on foreign technology, it does not detail specific public funding or name concrete policy steps to achieve that vision.
