Denmark
Summary
Denmark’s DDI value indicates a moderate level of digital dependence, reaching 0.75 in 2023, with little change over time. The scores across individual dimensions have likewise remained highly stable. The country is almost completely reliant on foreign platforms and ICT patents (both averaging 0.99), yet only moderately dependent on trade in ICT goods and services (averaging 0.61 and 0.54, respectively). A shift away from the U.S. and towards China is noticeable: Denmark’s bilateral dependence on the former’s ICT goods went steadily down from 0.45 in 2010 to 0.38 in 2023, while that on China increased slightly from 0.84 to 0.87.
Policies
Between 2020 and 2026, the Danish government issued numerous policies in a variety of fields with the goal of reducing its dependence on foreign technology: While some projects and strategies addressed vulnerabilities in cloud software or cybersecurity, a 2021 measure empowered the Danish government to prohibit specific suppliers in the sphere of critical telecommunications infrastructure.
