Austria
Summary
Austria maintained a relatively stable and moderate degree of digital dependence throughout the observed period. The DDI value increased slightly from around 0.70 in 2010 to 0.73 in 2023. Throughout the period, dependence on foreign digital platforms remained consistently very high (approx. 0.99), while ICT patent dependence stayed at the maximum level (1.0 in each year). Austria reduced its dependence on trade in ICT goods only marginally after peaking around 2021/2022, whereas dependence on trade in ICT services increased noticeably, rising from 0.43 in 2010 to 0.50 in 2023.
Policies
While some Austrian policies covered fields like cybersecurity and cloud infrastructure between 2020 and 2026 too, there appears to be a clear focus on the sphere of semiconductor production. Initiatives like the National Semiconductor Funding Package are embedded in a larger European strategy to reduce dependence. The package bundles substantial state funding to leverage private sector investments.
